Perth Branch Representative

What makes the job rewarding, interesting, and challenging?

I am currently working at JESCO’s Perth Branch in the capital of Western Australia.
Before relocating to Perth, I worked at several LNG receiving terminals in Japan around Ise Bay and Osaka Bay, mainly overseeing unloading operations. At that time, LNG market was shifting from long-term contracts—such as Indonesia’s long-term projects—to more flexible spot and short-term contracts, so I supported ship-shore compatibility studies and the unloading operations for a wide variety of cargoes under different contract structures.

Today, my main role is to act as the buyer’s representative under long-term FOB contracts in Australia. I monitor loading operations, verify compositional analyses, and confirm the loaded quantities.
One of the most critical tasks is the verification of the quantity after loading, using gas chromatograph data supplied by the terminal. I cross check the quantity with independent surveyors and sellers to finalize the cargo’s delivered energy on behalf of the buyer. Australia is one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, shipping cargoes daily to many destinations. Because every cargo is subject to its own Measurement & Testing (M&T) provisions and seller / buyer specific agreements, misinterpretations can easily lead to quantity disputes. Although reconciling those differences can be demanding, it is deeply satisfying when we correct an error.
Even though my contribution is indirect, being part of the supply chain that delivers LNG from loading to unloading terminals—and thereby supporting Japan’s stable electricity and gas supply—is a source of my motivation.

Why I’m glad I joined JESCO

Many of my colleagues have backgrounds as ship’s officers, whereas I majored in political science and had no prior experience in shipping when I joined. I strive every day to deepen my knowledge of LNG and vessel operations.
When mechanical issues arise during loading with no clear precedent, on-site troubleshooting can be challenging. However, we handle vessels as a team, allowing me to draw on the specialized expertise of our staff. Teamwork is a core strength at JESCO, and it reinforces the importance of continuously building one’s own area of expertise.
